The male Black Redstart Phoenicuros ochruros is without a doubt one of the more striking winter visitors to the village, and the species continues to show well in our gardens and orchards as the new year unfolds…

It’s rusty, red tail is unfortunately obscured in the latest of Kiersten’s shots, but that grey cap and jet black face and chest are all you usually need to see for a pretty straightforward ID. We tend to find our summer, breeding birds in slightly less suburban surroundings..but overwintering birds from further north in Europe can be quite fearless, and will even watch you gardening and wait for titbits just like Robins do back home!

Always worth the effort to try and see well – and typical of the range of species we encounter at this time of year. If you would like to learn more about our birdwatching trips and holidays, all the information you need is just a click away. We have some of the finest birdwatching southern Spain has to offer right on our doorstep…so please keep reading our posts for all our latest trip reports and sightings!
