Our Birding Tours in the Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada, Andalucia
Andalucia is such a rich birding destination. We have various birdwatching tours available. The exact trip will depend on the times of the year that you wish to visit and which birds you wish to see. We regularly update our venues depending on recent bird sightings. The following areas provide reliable bird activity throughout the year.
Hillsides of Lanjaron, Alpujarras
Dirt tracks above the town of Lanjaron take us to locations in the Sierra Nevada where we can see some fantastic Birds of Prey. Kestrels and Lesser Kestrels are common and you may spot Sparrowhawks and Peregrine Falcons. The Booted and Short Toed Eagles are regular visitors and we have resident Golden Eagles here. If you are lucky you will see the rare Bonelli's Eagles.
The giant Griffon Vultures pass through here. We see them regularly and sometimes get to photo them perched in groups on high crags above the Lanjaron valley. See our video "Griffon Vultures soaring in Spain's Sierra Nevada"
The area around the ruined Ventura hut is interesting and it is here that we have a chance to look down on the raptors below.
Wetlands of Padul, near Granada
These wetlands, some 20 minutes from Lanjaron, provide a habitat for a variety of smaller birds including Warblers, Shrikes, Buntings, Larks etc  We have seen Montagues Harrier here and also wonderful fly past from a Bonelli's Eagle. There are organised hides here that provide good viewing.
The Sierra de Lugar, Orgiva
Above the town of Orgiva in the Alpujarras rise the Sierra de Lugar mountains. This is not only a great viewpoint for the Sierra Nevada, but also provides really good birdwatching opportunities. The habitat suits Rock Thrushes, Shrikes, Crossbills, Hoopoes and Tits. Birds of Prey frequently patrol the area.
Outlying Areas
We also pay visits to the pretty Andalucian white hill villages of Capileira, Bubion, Cañar and Soportujar, where the Poqueira Gorge and forests of Puente Palo provide good birdwatching opportunities. In addition we know some good wetland sites near Salobreña on the Costa Tropical coats near Motril that are worth a visit.
