Grabbed the chance to take a short run down the track into the valley below Lanjaron, researching as always birdwatching options in and around the village.
Passed through the plots and olive groves of the valley floor and climbed slowly onto rockier ground. Without much effort we soon had really good views of a Black Wheatear, resident all year in our region but my first of the season and a bird I had been waiting to see since I arrived.
Stopped to watch House Martins and Swallows swooping down and drinking from a water storage tank for a while. Driving back towards Lanjaron very pleased to find a Woodchat Shrike, a striking summer visitor to the Alpujarras and our second in four days. Had good views as it waited for signs of prey before moving on. Great birdwatching, and just outside the village…
