Working in the garden today as the weather continues to hold…and with the rich song of the Nightingale now suddenly part of the daily background chorus, there are worse places I could be! Nightingales are without doubt beautifully talented songsters, but for a splash of spring colour you have to look elsewhere. For me, you need look no further than the tropical brilliance of the Bee Eater.
A flock of fifteen or so flew over the house today, heading inland over the village of Lanjaron. As ever I heard them before I saw them. The distinctive “pruh…pruh”calls carry a long way and can be frustratingly hard to pinpoint…but I had great views as this group passed directly overhead. With their blue-green chests, yellow throats and distinctive black eye masks they’re stunning, unmistakable birds, and I had flashes of their brick red caps and backs as they flicked and turned within the flock. Fabulous birdwatching, I never tire of seeing them…and we’re just a ten minute walk outside the village. Amazing!
