May in the Alpujarras…and the birdwatching just gets better and better! Our local birds of prey continue to put on a fantastic display, and today it was the turn of one of our passage visitors. After the wonderful arrival of Honey Buzzards on the 3rd of the month, Kiersten has once again snapped some terrific images of this summer migrant, on their way to breeding grounds further north.

Positive identification of raptors can often prove to be something of a challenge…and the Honey Buzzard is no exception. As always however there are some key points to look for and there are some distinctive details in the plumage that can be a great help. Have a look at these latest images below…

Note the “rings” in the tail of this individual…three bands, separating it from the more familiar Common Buzzard. Note also the bold “tiger stripes” through the pale patch on the underside of the wing…again, in contrast to the rather plainer patch seen in the Common Buzzard.

Bit more of a surprise this next shot. The Honey Buzzard can be secretive and difficult to see well once it has arrived at its breeding grounds…and is more often than not encountered soaring overhead during its migration. Full marks to Kiersten then for catching this one at rest…a close look just about reveals the characteristic bold spots and barring on the chest. Good stuff!

The Honey Buzzard breeds extensively right across Europe, and they cross the Mediterranean and mountain ranges on regular, annual “flight paths”. Fascinating to stop for a moment, and think about where these particular birds may eventually be headed for. Northern Spain, Great Britain…even Scandinavia. Intriguing! We’re thrilled of course just to have them passing through…another perfect example of how varied and exciting the birdwatching down here in Andalucia can be. Stick with us as the season rolls on and we’ll keep you up to date with all the latest news…
