Hoopoes, Shrikes and a Golden Oriole - daytripping with the Birdwatchalpujarras team

It’s the start of another week, and we’re off out again with guests for the day. We hoped the sunny hillsides around the village would bring us a few summer favourites…and we were soon on our way up the mountain once more. Black Wheatear showed well on rocky outcrops above the road as we headed [...]

Cirl Bunting at Tajos de la Cruz

Whilst out walking the dogs this morning I photographed a Cirl Bunting. It was in the trees on the left hand side walking down from the Ermita Tajos de la Cruz on the GR142 above Lanjaron.

Southern Grey Shrike and our second Roller of the month!

The chance of a lift up the mountain was too good to miss this morning, and gave me a great chance to get another look at some favourite spots on the hillside above the village. The drive uphill is a familiar route, and the usual suspects showed well along the way. Woodchat Shrikes of course, [...]

The Bee Eater...numbers down on last year?

It’s a hot Thursday afternoon, and with a birdwatching trip this Monday only days away I’m off in search of one of our more enigmatic summer visitors. The Bee Eater Merops apiaster is without doubt a spectacular bird…but numbers are definitely down this year, and they’re proving hard to find. There’s no doubt about it, [...]

The planet Earth is truly breathtaking. Gazing at photos from distant lands is a sobering experience, and it reminds humankind how truly bless they are to have such an amazing planet. Yet, much of Earth’s mysteries remain hidden to us. We have only begun to discover the driving forces behind this enigmatic universe. Nature lovers [...]

Falconry for children at Center Parcs

My nephews recently spent a few days at Center Parcs in Sherwood Forest whilst there they had a go at falconry. What a great way to introduce children to birds of prey up close and personal. My nephews are 5 and 7 years old and took with ease to having the birds on their arms [...]

The Roller - brand new images of this exotic seasonal visitor!

They say patience is a virtue! Bold, alert and spectacularly beautiful…we’ve waited a long time to bring you images of this wonderful species, and we’re thrilled to have this summer migrant on our lists at last. The Roller Coracias garrulus is the sole representative of a predominantly African family, returning from wintering grounds to breed [...]

New species for June! Summer on the hillsides of Lanjaron

It’s another bright June morning down here in Andalucia, and with guests on board for the day we’re looking forward to some great birding on the hillsides above the village. With the season well under way there’s always plenty to look out for, and so we picked up our new friends Steve and Linda and [...]

The Cirl Bunting - brand new images of this colourful Mediterranean resident!

We’ve waited patiently for this striking little species to make an appearance…but finally, we’ve got our first ever images  of a Cirl Bunting Emberiza cirlus to share with you today! This colourful, streaky bunting is a real rarity in the UK…up at the extreme northern edge of its European range, it’s confined to the south-east [...]

The beautiful song of the Nightingale

A beautiful song from a rather dull looking bird can mean one thing only, the Nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos) is back. It can be heard all over Lanjaron and the Alpujarras singing day and night. I thought I would share this short video with you, for those who have never heard it and for those who [...]
